Reaped | at the risk of being redundant, here's yet another reason that immigrating to australia doesn't seem like such a bad idea lately.** "A massive database that the government will use to monitor every purchase made by every American citizen is a necessary tool in the war on terror, the Pentagon said Wednesday." necessary? it's necessary to know how much i spend a month on tampons? how much of my cash goes to recreational drug use? probably both are supporting terrorism in some way anyway, so it goes. and who's in charge? a rather anonymous robotchnik, mr. john poindexter, one-time convicted for five counts of misleading Congress and making false statements during the Iran-Contra investigation. but hey, that was the eighties, and we're a kinder, gentler nation now. coke & shoulderpads be damned, we have laser guns. i guess once oliver north is welcomed back to late night tv, things have changed. so the good news: this can't happen for a couple years, while they build the database, so theoretically if a civil-liberties-lovin, corruption-stompin politico were to win the next election, this could be stopped. indeed. and perhaps i will marry a rockefeller & spend the rest of my days wearing haute couture and doing philanthropy for MOMA. or maybe the computer will become sentient, and say things like, 'i'm afraid i can't let you do that, george.' so to recap: 1)the government is bad 2)your secrets are now privy to people with funny names like 'poindexter' 3)you can't do a damn thing about it 4)if you do do something about it, chances are you'll wind up labled a domestic terrorist & locked up with all the Earthfirst & Animalfirst people anyway (see rule 1) 5)australia has lots of cheap beachfront property, decent beer, & young blokes **well, there's the whole leaving-your-family thing, but i'm pretty sure i can convince my sister & mom. and my dad's buying a house in mexico as soon as he inherits anyway, so he's taken care of too.
