7:38 p.m. The Duhks and other things kookily kanadian 2003-03-26
Reaped a man i was helping find some articles in the British Medical Journal asked me today, "Do you know when the war is ending?" and I said, "Hopefully soon my friend. Before anyone else gets killed." Don't think he was from 'round these here parts. Caribbean accent gives it away.

Enough talk of that though (yeah right). i was glad for the escape last weekend. the river was so high: usually there are limestone cliffs jutting up twenty feet from the river, looks like a pile of skulls from certain angles, and a steep white sand beach crawling down to the tannic water. Not this weekend. All the snow & rain from up north had filled the Suwannee to its brim. You could see the current swirling around branches of trees that used to grow on the beach, the rope swing had washed away, and at night you could hear large ominous splashings quite close to shore. At it's lowest the river was still a good fifteen feet deep in the middle--this weekend it went down at least double or triple that. so no swimming for the goat. though we did munch some chocolate shrooms on its shores one dusky afternoon.

the music ruled, as usual: Earl Scruggs, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (who had very bad taste in jokes & ultimately was more nitty than gritty), Donna the Buffalo (will they ever write a new song?), annnnd this really awesome folky band from Manitoba called the Duhks (pronounced 'ducks' as opposed to 'dukes') who ruled my asshole and not just b/c they're nominated for a Juno (like a canadian grammy-kooky!)--as i was picking up their cd the drummer (the self proclaimed "mambo king of toronto" or something like that) goes, "ooh, good choice!" but i didn't hear him. my brush with canadian fame, gone like a shotgunned can of Molson Ice. but the cd is excellent--tons of banjo, fiddle, cuban drums, and a great singer who sports pretty hardcore tats for a folky. and they sing in French, which makes me love them that much more.

well filthies, i'm off. ta!
